This one is our favorite creamy formula because, as the name promises, it truly is gentle but effective.facebook dialogPinterestGuerlain Lait De Beauté Satin Milk Pure Radiance CleanserSupposedly, Cleopatra had the softest skin thanks to frequent milk baths. Imagine that same silky texture with added antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, and the most divine fragrance—without the weirdness of actual milk. We're describing this facial cleanser. As you massage it into your skin and rinse away, you're left feeling clean but satin smooth. Graf also points out that this one can be gently wiped off as well. No rinsing required.facebook dialogPinterestEau Thermale Avène Micellar Lotion Cleanser and Make-Up Remover”Micellar waters require no rinsing since they are hydrophilic, which picks up dirt,” says Graf. The low concentration of mild surfactants called micelles remove impurities, but the hyaluronic acid and chamomile extract hydrate at the same time.facebook dialogPinterestCetaphil Gentle Skin CleanserThis basic cleanser from Cetaphil is beloved by both dermatologists and editors—it's practically a Best of Beauty staple at this point. “It's inexpensive ($9.89 on drugstore.com), available at all drug stores, and soap-free, so it can be wiped off,” Graf says of the classic. There's zero fragrance and it's very mild (not stripping whatsoever), but it gets the job done.facebook dialogPinterestKiehl's Ultra Facial CleanserIf your skin goes haywire in the winter, this one's for you. The gel formula does foam a bit, so it's a little stronger, but Graf says a couple of key ingredients—avocado and apricot kernel oil—add extra boosts of hydration to balance you out and prevent your skin from feeling tight.facebook dialogPinterestDhc Deep Cleansing Oil”Oil cleansers are moisturizing and cleansing at the same time, which is great for winter,” Graf explains. “It means they are less likely to negatively impact your skin's moisture barrier.” Well, this is the cleansing oil of all cleansing oils. It's got a cult following and rightfully so. Olive oil is its base, which Graf says is great for all skin types. Plus, it removes makeup while cleansing—hooray for combining steps!—and after rinsing with water, it feels like you already applied a serum. Basically, it's a three-in-one.facebook dialogPinterestDolce & Gabbana Cleansing OilThis cleansing oil is a splurge, for sure, but it's that good. Its key ingredient is a gold silk sericin—a protein derived from silkworm cocoons. Fancy, we know. It totally removes even the most waterproof of makeup, cleanses your skin, and hydrates, too. Oh and it also won a Best of Beauty Award this year. Anything to combat blustery-weather-induced dryness, right?facebook dialogPinterestSunday Riley Ceramic Slip CleanserWe all swear by clay masks because they draw out impurities and tighten pores, but how about clay cleansers? They're not as common, but this one from Sunday Riley is awesome for those with oily skin (for the same reason the masks are effective) or sensitive skin (Graf says sandalwood reduces irritation and inflammation). Those two factors combined, along with the gentle gel formula, make it perfect for winter.facebook dialogPinterestVmv Hypoallergenics Red Better Deeply Soothing Cleansing CreamAs you apply this formula, it almost feels like you're putting on face cream. Its laundry list of soothing ingredients, like coconut oil and green tea, add an extra layer of après-ski-worthy relief. But, we promise, it really does cleanse, too. And like all VMV Hypoallergenics products, it's free of all common allergens. If you have supersensitive skin, use this.#Keywordsbeauty productsface washfacial cleanserskinceuticalsguerlaineau thermale avenecetaphilkiehl'sDHCdolce & gabbanasunday rileyVMV HypoallergenicsPinterest

Best Face Wash For Dry Skin

Being on the extreme end of the skin type spectrum can be really hard. On one hand, there are those like me who have super oily skin, and all we pray for is a a day without shine and for our makeup to last longer than four hours without turning into a sloppy mess. Then there is the other side, which I’ve never had to deal with, which is super dry skin. I can only imagine how hard it is to deal with flaking, peeling, tightness and irritation all the time. Dry skin is just as complex and annoying as having oily skin.

“This cleanser is well suited for dry to sensitive skin but can be beneficial for all skin types — even oily and acne-prone skin. The product is surfactant-free and paraben-free to reduce dryness or irritation, leaving skin feeling smooth after cleansing,” says Dr. Jessica Weiser. “The milky consistency contains glycerin to prevent skin from drying, yet it is effective enough to remove debris and makeup from the skin’s surface.”

Jane Basson April 3rd 2016 I don’t understand why Cetaphil appears on this list, when just the week before there was an article called “SLS, The Known Irritant in your Skincare” all about avoiding sodium lauryl sulphate in skincare, how it thins the skin and increases permeability, etc. etc. Cetaphil has SLS as one of its main ingredients – seems to be very inconsistent advice to say the least! Kristiane Worsdell March 20th 2016 Be warned, if this bothers you, Cetaphil is packed full of parabens. Daniela Pedroza September 26th 2015 I’d recommend Monsia. Sophie hutton April 26th 2015 Thanks for the Cetaphil recommendation- it’s working really well for my normally very imbalanced skin!! Maria dalton February 24th 2015 Monsia makes the best in my opinion. Coconut Monkey June 24th 2013 Another really good gentle cleanser is Dermalogica Essential Cleansing Solution. Fabulous for dry sensitive skin. I keep going back to it.

Parched skin calls for hydration, which is exactly what the oil in this formula provides. The cool thing about this cleanser is that even if you have oily skin, you shouldn’t shy away from it. Oil adheres to oil, pulling it away from your skin like a magnet. So if your skin gets oilier in the summer, you don’t have to switch up your cleanser if you’re already using this one on your dry skin during the winter. It’s noncomedogenic, so it won’t clog your pores. Win-win.

“I love this wash because it balances the skin and leaves a silky and matte finish,” says Dr. Fran E. Cook-Bolden. “Although it’s made specifically for oil control and oily skin, it’s great for most skin types because of the balancing effect. I use it and my skin is normal and mildly sensitive!”

Everyone in the Get the Gloss office is a fan of Cetaphil because it’s reasonably priced, incredibly gentle and great for resetting the skin back to its healthy best, which is why Dr Sam Bunting often recommends it. A little goes a long way and my skin always feels better afterwards – it’s my go-to if I’ve had a reaction or my skin just feels a little prickly. Tip: use that micellar lotion first to remove stubborn eye makeup as this formula really is gentle by name and nature. Conversely, it does contain SLS (see why SLS can be very bad for your skin here) but I’ve personally found it to be more than gentle on my own skin; if you’re actively avoiding sulphates then this one is not for you.

In a perfect world, someone would wash my face at night like Joe Buddens does for his girlfriend because I really hate doing it myself. In the meantime, I skip traditional face wash and saturate a cotton pad with micellar water, swipe all over, and repeat until I get a clean one. –Julie Schott, ELLE.com Beauty Director

“I am a fan of this classic cleanser because it’s not too harsh and will not dry out the skin. It doesn’t have reactive ingredients in it so even the most sensitive skin types can use it,” says aesthetician, Melanie Simon whose clients include Vanessa Williams. “Aggressive cleansers with acidic ingredients, like salicylic acid, strip the epidermis which makes the skin look dull. Cetaphil doesn’t strip the top layer of the skin which reflects light and makes us appear more youthful.”
